If you love your LUSH, (and who doesn’t?), get your bathbomb fix now at Fashion Island. The upbeat British brand of ethical and innovative bath, body, skin and hair care, just opened its first Orange County boutique at Fashion Island. LUSH is known for its cruelty-free “naked” products with cheeky names, effective ingredients, and environmental conscience.
The new shop features soaps piled high like exotic cheeses, bath bombs presented like perfectly round apples and fresh face masks served up from ice-filled fridges. The shop includes a cozy kitchen table, where customers can sit and discuss their skincare and hair care needs with one of LUSH’s expert consultants (aka LUSHies). This genuine “back to basics” approach encourages a laid-back shopping experience with friendly expert advice. Immense work has gone into ensuring an eco-friendly design in-store, a fundamental concept that runs throughout every facet of the business.
“We have been looking to expand our presence in Orange County following the success of our shop at Anaheim Garden Walk,” said Mark Wolverton, President and CEO of LUSH North America. “We have had our eye the Fashion Island property for quite some time and are excited to offer yet another convenient location for our loyal fans in the area.”
Lucky us, eh fellow Lushies?

![]() | Z'Tejas, everybody's Z'happy |
Rarely do you really find a restaurant where everybody wins. Z’Tejas Southwestern Grill at South Coast Plaza is a fresh mix of spice, affordability, availability of Vegetarian dishes, kid’s healthy, refreshing cocktail concoctions and more.

The place has been open awhile now, but many OC’ers are still new to the offerings. You’ll find culinary influences there from Louisiana, Texas, California and Mexico. And the ambiance is upscale with an exhibition kitchen, private dining room, mahogany bar, wrought iron detailing, copper accents and also al fresco dining.
I was invited to check out the latest Z’ and get the dish on what’s going down. While there, I ordered up the Mango Pepper Chile Salad and adored the pairing of such healthy with attitude (and was won over by a full Vegetarian side of the menu). The kids also came in tow to try what’s more in store for in ‘11, such as the new Z’Kids menu for all under $6. Think mini-adult food; all from healthy chopped salads to gourmet Vegetable Quesadillas, as well as some familiar mac and cheese and more.
Happy hour prices will please any casual meetup, and if you do dine with the children, be sure to go on a Sunday when they eat free. That’s right. Check it: you can enjoy adult atmosphere and pair with on-the-house meals for your little foodies.
Z’Tejas is right on the money in more ways than one. So spice up your outings, and maybe give this Southwestern eatery a go.

![]() | Protein does a body good |

Looking for ways to protein up? You might just be down for this recipe. Simple, fast, easy protein shakes. Calorie, carb, fat and protein counts attached too.
And psst, if you know me, you know I don’t do recipes, because welI ... I don’t cook. But I am one for good health and wellness, and I’m out to change my ways in 2011 by getting healthier and eating a more organic, balanced diet. So who knows what’s ahead.
That said, this whipped-up wealth of goodness is care of my organic-off-the-chart friend and wellness queen, Gabrielle Tschopp seen here (if I drink this maybe I’ll get her abs, green knowledge and fab cooking skills?). Enjoy.
FOR MOMS:
1 C crushed ice
8 oz water (or unsweetened vanilla almond milk)
1 scoop protein powder (Designer Whey Chocolate or Vanilla)
½ ripe banana
1 T natural peanut butter
1 scoop Green SuperFood (Amazing Grass Chocolate Drink Powder)
Blend and serve immediately.
Makes approx. 16 oz.: Calories 290, Protein 20g, Carb 15g, Fat 7g
(Note: This is a fabulous breakfast that will keep you super energized for three hours! Drink 90 minutes prior to a workout for amazing strength and endurance. Also good for the afternoon lull.)
FOR KIDS:
1 C crushed ice
8 oz organic milk, almond milk, rice milk or water
1 scoop protein powder (Designer Whey Chocolate)
1 ripe banana
1 scoop Green SuperFood (Amazing Grass Chocolate Drink Powder)
Blend and serve immediately.
Makes approx. 16 oz.: Calories 350, Protein 27g, Carb 45g
(Note: This makes a great breakfast and/or after-school snack. The only thing that is missing is good fat. If allergies are not a concern, you can add 1T of natural peanut butter or other nut butter for an additional 100 calories, or chase with 2t of omega-3 fish oil or flax oil which would add about 50 calories.)
![]() | :60 VIDEO: Cheers to no carbs. Meet Season’s 52. |
Check it: no heavy carbs, no butter, no bread, no fryers. And even organic wines for no-sulfate fans. Healthy, hip cuisine at this new West Coast stop in OC. Here’s a look.
So can all this healthy curb your cravings and satisfy? We left delighted. On this preview night at this new haunt that took over The Clubhouse, our crew tasted all from fig flatbread and table-tossed greens to parmesan artichoke, a variety of main dishes and rows of sweet deserts—all paired with a range of vino.
The atmosphere was buzzing and swank. The staff; gregarious and thoughtful.
The offerings were rich for this Vegetarian (no chicken stock is even used in any recipes), and Season’s 52 happily accommodates no-Gluten foodies and probably any other preference you have.
I must say it was so nice to not worry about all the hidden calories. And everything is seasonally picked. When you get vegetables and produce at the height of its season, you don’t need all that fluff it up with extra calories and butter sauce,” said head Chef Timothy.
Also, there’s a piano bar inside the bar for live, relaxed soak-up-the-scene entertainment.
Opens to all, OC, Monday, August 30th.
More OC Live Looks ahead here, or keep up with me at Facebook, Twitter or YouTube.
![]() | :60 VIDEO: Green without the extra granola, Melvita at Fashion Island |
How did I not sniff out this all-eco beauty loveshack Day 1? It’s all green, all-natural and all of only 3 in the US? Melvita has it all for women (and green guys). Head to toe, all the organic goods you could want.
I like the greenery’s offerings as I feel the boutique is legit. You see, I wonder about some of the organic products I’m offered out there and those I eye-spy while out and about. Are they FDA for real? Are they made in someone’s bathtub? I jest on that last part, but really, who knows.
So I know if FI backs them and they have the cash to rent the space they must be worthy. Worthy of the $14 I dropped on deodorant? Dunno yet. I’ll keep you posted, or you can stand real close next time you see me and judge for yourself.

![]() | Need a drink? Or 6? OC's Best Cocktails. |
I stepped up to the bar, along with a team of fellow OC journalists, to judge the 1st annual OCeanfront Cocktail Shakeoff. Our whirlwind shakeoff of 6 cocktails at 6 luxe lounges in 7 hours.
So we were whisked down PCH from 2-9pm, from one luxe oceanfront hotel to the next. It really was grueling. Our fine palettes (stop laughing) and discriminating tastes came into play, as well as the cocktail’s appearance, theme and originality. All of the below rocked.

Recipes all here as well via my OCeanfront friends.

Little more to whet the appetite? Here’s my live whrrl. Click anywhere below to meet some of my fellow media friends, and see more of the drinks and night. Amazing I could still form complete sentences at the end. Salud! And yes, this is why this is posted in Health & Body. Because a relaxing, tropical, exotic drink or 2 (or 6) can sometimes do a body and mind good.

![]() | Honey, Get Natural, Girl |
Ready to go naturally healthy? Lose the chemicals and add honey with the all-natural line out of New Zealand. Natural Being Skincare just dropped in the states. Its Manuka Honey and Oil are the secret botanicals.
Another secret is that you can get the whole line for under $100. Just try and compare Aveda with that.
I took my eco part in the 30-day New You Natural You challenge and tried the complete line. They were quality goods for sure, and I’m still blown away by the price, as well as the idea that it all seems to last so long. A few things you’ll notice: the honey has a naturally firming agent, so it tightens as it is applied (but it’s temporary, not botox, ladies.). The toner is a gel, which is very unusual. And the fragrance is less flowery than most lines; think that’s the all-naturalness.
Below is my whrrl photo story from the post-party challenge that was recently held at the new Madison’s Spa in Laguna Beach.
Fan Natural Being Skincare on Facebook to get the latest on their line.

The post party Whrrl fun:

I recently signed on for a few jaunts outside my comfort zone, and had a great time. It’s so easy to say, “No,” but know that you’re also saying no to new experiences, new people, new ways to blow off some steam.

Get out there in the SoCal sun, but get in to your fave derm office and stay on top of your skin health. I talked with skin guru, Dr. Jane Khoury, to get the skinny on what to look for: the A B C and Ds of melanoma.
Do you get annual skin checks? If so, bravo. If not, cue obnoxious buzzer noise! Get in there. It’s time.
I won’t get way into all the doom and gloom, but melanoma is on the rise. And while moles aren’t glam to talk about, here are a few quick facts to think on:
•One in four who develops skin cancer is under the age of 40
•One in 5 Americans will get skin cancer in the course of a lifetime
•More than a million people will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year
•One person dies every hour from skin cancer, primarily melanoma
•Nationally, there are more new cases of skin cancer each year than the combined incidence of cancer of the breast, prostate, lung and colon.
•The risk of developing melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, has more than doubled in the past decade.
Okay, enough already? I know. Just go.

![]() | Holy Detox, Woman |

A little detox girl talk with alternative gal Stacie Zimmer, about all-holistic health. We talk mental health, infrared saunas and shoot the sh*t about colon hydrotherapy (think Oprah meets Dr. Oz).
Debbie: So you recently sold your business to consult and have more time to take care of your 4 kids—and we’ll get to that—but first let’s talk holistic health and why you’re a believer.
Stacie (smiling): Sounds good. I believe in providing people with choices to bring about a healthy lifestyle and to help them experience preventative health, rather than just being reactive.
Debbie: What kind of holistic services can people take advantage of?
Stacie (nodding):There’s everything these days from organic facials and massages, nutrition, Ionic Footbaths and infrared saunas, Colon Hydrotherapy, Raindrop Therapy, Iridology and lots more.
Debbie: Wow (deer in lights), most people probably haven’t even heard of most of those things, right? What can you say about inviting women to open their minds to alternative wellness?
Stacie: Well, treatments like colon hydrotherapy may sound a bit awkward, but people are quickly won over by the incredible health results. People are getting the results they haven’t received anywhere else, so it’s made many more opened-minded. I want to give people “hope” for their health. I’ve been able to accomplish this by the more holistic, nontraditional, more eastern approach. And results are life changing.
Debbie: I believe in alternative solutions and not just accepting western medicine, which I think is critical, like you said, to give hope to those who’ve hit a wall with their doc or hit a wall with diseases such as cancer, which you also help treat here, right?
Stacie: Yes, preventative as well as existing and often unknown conditions in all areas—from gynecological to oncology to everyday health and wellness.
Debbie: So what is the ONE service women should try?
Stacie: Colon hydrotherapy, it’s a great first step to health. And I often refer clients to our traditional naturopath for an initial health consult and more importantly EFT, emotional freedom technique. I believe you need to deal with the emotions that are affecting your physical health.
Debbie: We’re gonna do an on-camera chat about the colon hydrotherapy, but let’s talk a little about women and taking care of ourselves, juggling all. A topic you know all too well—having two kids of your own and recently becoming guardian of two more children and running your business.
Stacie (amused): Yeah, There’s been a lot going on. And it’s easy to take health for granted. I think it’s important not to take on too many projects and to ask for help when you need it. It’s so important to make time for yourself. Even if it is meditating or praying for five minutes a day. Five minutes feels like an hour to me. We need to set a healthy example for our children. We’re more enjoyable to be around when we have taken care of ourselves. If we’re spent and tapped out, what good are we to our family? This type of viscous cycle has lead to many health crises. It’s about mindset. Ask, ‘How valuable is your health and peace of mind?’ Me? Quality of life is priceless.
Debbie: Very well said. And I admire your prioritizing. Single most life-changing thing women should do in their daily lives to live longer, stronger?
Stacie: Slow down. Focus on creating peace, true peace, in life. When we create this state of mind, everything else just seems to fall into place. We create wellness by taking care of ourselves and making our health a priority!
Debbie: One more thing. I want to point out that there are holistic services for kids too, right? Dr. Koren Barrett treats your daughter.
Stacie: Yes, she is a Defeat Autism Now! doctor. Chelsea, who’s 5, didn’t even speak nor was she toilet trained when she came to live with us last year. Now she’s potty-trained and speaking in complete sentences. Much success is due to Dr. Barrett, who does so much, it’s hard to explain it all. She helps them with individual nutritional needs to more complicated labs that may need to be done.
Debbie: Now, readers wanting to get in touch with you for holistic advice or referrals, how can they reach you?
Stacie: Well, they can always .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and I’d be happy to help. And as far as Colon Hydrotherapy, I’ve become a big fan of Feel Well 4 Life in Laguna Beach.

Instant Summer De-stressification for the Mind and Body.
One simple, quick-fix to too much of everything is a few dabs Aveda’s Active oil. It works magic on everyday stress and tight shoulders, and soothes tired muscles after workouts. I’ve been a die-hard Active fan for years, addicted to the instant, intense cool-heat sensation.
The wintergreen and menthol combo does wonders to relax. Aveda also carries Beautifying and Calming Composition oils that you can use on your face and body. Both are great, but not quite the kick and quick instant de-stressification of the Active. Seek and find at Mission Viejo mall, South Coast, Spectrum and more.
A little Active, chased by a Green Apple martini, and it’s all summer good.

Avanti Café in Costa Mesa is one of those spots you might miss if you don’t know about it. Located off 17th Street, it’s small in size but big in concept. There’s a lot going on in this tucked away space, such as entertainment, arts and events.
Walk into Avanti and you’re instantly met with gourmet sauces, spices, teas, jams, wines and more. Head back a bit and you’ll see the display of fresh daily eats—all organic and handcrafted food from fresh, local farms. It’s a vegetarian spot, but you don’t have to be one to go, and many who go, aren’t.
The flavor is the attraction and OC moms will dig the grab-and-go frozen section; healthy dishes that are ready anytime. You can even let the kids pick a frozen tub of healthy cookie dough (no not an oxymoron, just creative recipes).
Avanti serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and a variety of drinks, including: wine, beer/ale, teas and coffee. If you’re throwing a party, they cater. And you can visit the site anytime for a virtual list of 30 gourmet recipes you can whip up yourself.

![]() | Groovy Girl |

Laura Schenider is the gal in the groovy pants who teaches Groovy Vinyasa. Yoga to Led Zeppelin, Marvin Gaye and Nikka Costa. I caught up with her to talk moves, groves and life at large.
Debbie: The first time I took your class, I had to know more and get the downlow on your style and backstory. Two things really surprised me: You used to HATE yoga. Youre a Mom with three kids. Kinda blew my mind.
Laura Schneider: Yeah, it tends to.
First, why Groovy Vinyasa?
LS: I have always loved great music, and think it can be inspirational whether you are running that last mile or holding that yoga pose for a few more breaths. I didn’t make up the concept of playing fun contemporary music while practicing yoga, but I do believe I am one of the few teachers in Orange County who teach to it. It is popular with some yoga teachers up in LA, which is where I was born and lived most of my life, and I just really connected to that type of a class more so than the traditional class with meditational or no music at all.
Yeah, youre not so much traditional. Talk about how you used to hate yoga, as I know women who would rather have needles in their eyes than go to a yoga class.
LS: Yeah (laughing), the first class I ever took was just way to mellow and didnt challenge me at all, and I just decided yoga wasn’t for me. I come from a background of really athletic sports, you know I love running and boxing and kickboxing and I just was so bored the first couple yoga classes I took and I thought I just cant do this, its NOT for me. Then I had had my third child and I still had some baby weight left to lose, and one day my brother and I were walking in HB by a yoga studio and he sorta dragged me in and I decided to try a class with my now-friend Newton. It was a vinyasa class, which is linking one pose to another through the breath, so you are constantly moving, so I thought, Okay that might work, it might keep me interested. So we went and I remember at the end of the class I was hooked. I loved it! I was drenched in sweat, ya know, heart is pounding, muscles are shaking and I just thought, Oh my God this is it. I love it!
What kinds of music do you play?
LS: I play everything from Led Zeppelin to Marvin Gaye. I love to mix it up. I have so many different playlists, and it really just depends on the day. Some of my favorites are Sting, Seal, John Mayer, Robin Thicke, Beck. I also have playlists that are more “downtempo” music with musicians like Nightmares on Wax, Thievery Corporation and Quantic.
Is it sacrilegious to do yoga to Death Cab for Cutie and Coldplay? (joking)
LS: I don’t think so at all (laughing). There has been this misconstrued belief with yoga that its some kind of a religious thing and some people dont want to try it cause they think you have to be Buddhist, which is ridiculous. I think there is more of a spiritual relationship to it with whatever religion you have.
Its kind of cliché to say that yoga helps you find daily balance, give you perspective, does it really do it?
LS: I do think it does. definitely, because I have a Type A personality, but I have mellowed a lot since I started practicing yoga. Ive noticed things that used to bother me, dont bother me quite as much, with the kids, life in general, body image or whatever. You start to realize when you see what your body can do, and the strength that you have, not just physically, but internally as well, and you connect with that ... its as though all these other little things arent so important anymore. I started to feel kind of a deeper connection to kind of whats out there in the universe, and I think thats also what brings that sense of calm and peace and then that just extends into your daily living.
Can people try out your class? Where all do you teach?
LS: Yes, I would love for people to come try a class. Right now I am teaching at Equinox in Newport Beach and Corepower Yoga in Huntington Beach. All first-time students at Corepower receive a free week of yoga. As far as Equinox, I do believe that you can simply come and just pay for a class if you don’t want to join as a member.
Right on. Thanks for chattin’ it up with us, Laura.

Shortcut To Beauty: Bring The Stylist To You. For some, getting a haircut can be a blissful afternoon escape alone. For others, arranging the time to get there and back can quickly cut the beauty of it all.
Why not cut the chaos and have your stylist come to you. Now, the “divadressers” probably won’t make the journey, but frankly, who needs them and their $300 bill, but these days you may just find some highly skilled hairdressers willing to make the trip. They get to skip the drive to the shop and the rent for the space.
Ask your favorite hairdresser to bring her shears and dye and stop by. If she’s not up for it, ask around, some fellow moms may know just the gal. (Now, careful when asking: you may get the “oh, there’s a gal on the block who used to do hair, she’ll probably come by”. Every street has one, but note words used to.)
A favorite, on-trend stylist who happily travels to you is artistic stylist Natalie Jaeger. She’s established in the OC area, is educated by the best and has been around the block at top shops, currently at Lotus Salon & Spa. Cut, color, extensions, fancy-night updo’s are all on her list.
So ring your regular gal or guy, or give Natalie Jaeger a go (mention for $20 off savings; call 949.232.7631. (She doubles as a lash model; hence the fly eye shot.)
