Surf and Sand: Beachy Family Getaway

Surf and Sand: Beachy Family Getaway

February 02, 2012

You may not think the luxe Surf and Sand in Laguna Beach is a family getaway, but you’d be surprised. My story on the resort on CBSLA.com; here’s a splash of the story… Its name says it all. The Surf and Sand Resort in Laguna Beach is surf-surreal close with the sand at hand, literally just steps away. The hotel is pure SoCal without the over-the-top need to impress. It is quite luxe, but in a boutique beach/chic way. There’s no dress code, it’s very comfortable and it seems anything goes.

The original hotel was born in 1948—starting with just 13 rooms. Since then, Surf and Sand has been renovated many times and added 2 additional buildings (for a total of 167 rooms now), but luckily the bones of a former beach motel are still evident at the Four Diamond rated resort. You’ll see its carefree ‘50s style in details such as its simplistic lobby and hallways that are exposed to the outside.

My favorite finds for baby, January 2012 OC Family cover story

My favorite finds for baby, January 2012 OC Family cover story

January 05, 2012

I set out to find the latest gear for little ones in this month’s cover story for OC Family. Here’s a taste and link to the full story…

What’s a new parent to do? The baby marketplace is filled with an overload of “now” and “next” and “latest and greatest.” It can be overwhelming when trying to sort through it all. I know this all too well, as I’m the exact demographic that all these new products are targeting. A mom (again) and six years out of the new-baby scene (we have two other children), I was on the hunt for the smartest, most stylish and most ingenious baby must-haves.

So, if you have a baby due soon, here’s my list: everything from a 360-degree orbital stroller with engraved skateboards to a space-age-looking swing/bouncer hybrid to the latest green line of lotions for babe and mum. Enjoy the gadgetry and sophisticated products of all things baby for the lucky newbie parents and newborns of 2012.

We just gave birth to our little guy, Fox, who helped us try out all of the items.

Here’s a look below at the 4-page Feature Story in this month’s OC Family Magazine.

Disneyland holiday magic to the rescue

Disneyland holiday magic to the rescue

November 22, 2011

After 8 long, stressful days in NICU since our baby arrived early, we needed a big dose of some Disney magic–some lighthearted fantasy, the escape of a holiday wonderland. So our first outing with our new baby was Disneyland! Some probably thought I was crazy to be out and about so fast, but it was just the fix our family needed.

You see our new boy was born on my daughter’s birthday and “It’s okay, Mom” was all I heard for that week, as her party got cancelled, she slept in hospitals, she ate her grocery cake next to my Mission Hospital bedside and, well you get the picture. She was a trooper through it all, but I saw the deep, disappointment of her invisible 8th birthday that I just couldn’t seem to fix. Not many things can make up for a year of anticipated hopes and little girl dreams.

Luckily, Disneyland just so happened to be hosting a holiday blogger preview event. So we gathered ourselves, and ungracefully stumbled out the door as our new family of five.

My girl beamed, giddy with the promise of the special escape. “Mommy, the castle was so beautiful!” “The reindeer were the best.” “The rides were so much fun.” And she beamed as we hit the holiday party later that night. It was so fantastic to see her having fun, getting lost in the moment and finally getting her special day.

Indeed we all had fun, forgetting the stress of our very long week and becoming normal again … socializing, laughing, walking amongst the magical decor. Sometimes nothing other than Disneyland can fix the big things. Let’s face it, it’s tough times economically, the holidays can bring stress and sadness, and many other factors get magnified. So if you need a holiday boost, Disneyland can really work its magic. It did for us. We are so blessed to have our happy, healthy bundle of joy. And when it comes to memories, I’m sure my girl will always remember her belated 8th birthday celebrated at Disneyland.

So if you can relate (whatever your circumstance), pick you fantasy day to get away and get lost in all the holiday spirit. There’s much to see and do in 2011, from the new toon-themed cartoon-style Christmas tree this season for the 2011 holidays at Disneyland Resort. Check out the seasonal addition to the “World of Color” nighttime water spectacular. Holiday favorites return with “A Christmas Fantasy” parade, the nightly snowfall on Main Street, U.S.A, and the special holiday versions of Haunted Mansion and “it’s a small world” Holiday. And in Fantasyland, holiday guests will find the traditional snowdrifts and icicles adorning Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle.  Then top the day off with a “Believe … in Holiday Magic” fireworks night show. For more details, visit http://www.disneyland.com/holidays and for hotel and ticket offers, visit http://www.disneyland.com/offers.

Happy holidays, all. Enjoy the magic of the season.

Wave your Freak Flag. Shrek was a heck of a show at SCFTA.

Wave your Freak Flag. Shrek was a heck of a show at SCFTA.

October 06, 2011

Shrek the Musical was silly, funny, charming, wild, vibrant and had the crowds cheering, laughing, hooting. My kids adored it; they wouldn’t even let us leave early on the Weds school night it was. And I saw many in the crowd who didn’t even have kids. Shrek the Musical, on now through Oct. 16th, at Segerstrom Center for the Arts is really a riot with goofy kid humor and many inside jokes parents will giggle out loud at.

Several of us from OC Family were invited to the show to sit in the Social Swamp and tweet away. You can check the Twitter hashtag: #shrekontour to see the live tweeting and reactions from our different families there. The tweet trail will give you a play-by-play kind of feel for the show. I never like to get too in-depth on reviews, as I hate to give too much away about performances, so I won’t go into the favorite acts or lines (there’s too much ogre magic to let out of the bag). But know that you and your kids will adore it and that the cast, sets and costumes were top-notch. And that oversized puppet dragon was very cool!

Here’s a look at the trailer to give you a tease:

And a snapshot here of our tweeting in the Social Swamp at Segerstrom Hall. Enjoy, my ogre friends, and wave your inner Freak Flag when you go, as everyone is different and that is the beauty of what makes the world go round.

Pre Emmy Lounge Boom Boom Room Wrapup

Pre Emmy Lounge Boom Boom Room Wrapup

September 19, 2011

This weekend was not only the 2011 Emmy’s, but the exclusive Pre Emmy Awards Celebrity Gifting Lounge, held at The Intercontinental Hotel Los Angeles in Beverly Hills. Style Guru Jayneoni Moore rolled out the red carpet for celebrity moms with her Pre Emmy Lounge Boom Boom Room.

The lounge hosted new must-haves for infant and toddler items, from the latest strollers to nursery furniture to items for toddlers and preschoolers.

Being 7 months pregnant, I was on the hunt for new fab and fun finds. Among my fave finds was “I’m The Daddy” Daddy Scrubs, seen below. What a fun idea for Dads to stand out, as so much attention is always given to baby and Mom. Fun, fresh, unique.

Petit Tresor had some amazing luxury cribs and nursery collections. They’re inspired by Hermes, Bottega Veneta, Manolo Blahnik, so you can imagine the end result. Located in LA, they are the source for sophisticated mothers with clients like Brad and Angie and Madonna.

A big must-have item featured was the new LeapPad learning tablet by Leapfrog. It seemed impressive for kids 4-7, with a tricked-out iPad-like gizmo to get your kids learning while having fun. Think: built-in camera/video recorder, a library of 100+ cartridge games and activities and innovative creativity and reading apps.

Also Plum Organics, just featured on the Today Show and Ellen, seemed to have a great, healthy line of babe eats. I’ll definitely have them on my list in a few months when it’s baby dining time.

Finally, I thought Peekinz Baby was adorable for stylish, eco diaper checks. A bamboo back pocket opens to let you check diaper status is style.

So who won at the Emmy’s? I don’t know! I didn’t actually get to watch, but found several must-haves to be on the lookout for here.

VIDEO: An OC-close getaway: Oceanside and Legoland

VIDEO: An OC-close getaway: Oceanside and Legoland

August 22, 2011

My family and I were invited to check out Oceanside, and here’s a video look at all the happenings, from where to stay and play to a look at Legoland.

The Wyndham Oceanside Pier Resort had all the comforts of home, as it’s a timeshare also. So think 2-room, oceanfront, jacuzzi tub, kitchen, and laundry (click for my quick look around our suite). And the pool is not crowded and is very relaxing. Best of all, it’s steps from everything: the beach, restaurants, museums and more.

As far as what to do in Oceanside, as you saw in the video, we filled our few days with CA Surf Museum (you’ll see Bethany Hamilton’s shark-bite board, longboards vs shortboards, skate truck history and more), The Mission (beautiful grounds and good ole history for the kids) , Cafe 101 (an authentic ’50s diner with killer pineapple shakes), Ruby’s (classic pierside eats) and The Breakfast Club is a great all-’80s diner (think MJ, Duran Duran, and an owner who even offered to go get my husband allergy pills down the street). And Wheel Fun Rentals makes for an easy, breezy 4-passenger bike ride on the strand. Oceanside is just small-town, good vibes. You can do all of the above for a very affordable price too. The museum and mission are just a few bucks, and all the diners were well within reach.

And rounding out the vacation with a trip to Legoland was a great move. I loved how clean, bright and spacious the park was, and it was really nice to get rides, water fun and aquarium in one, so get the park hopper for sure. The kids loved Splash Battle best, so don’t miss the boat fun. Ideal age is probably 4-7 at the park, but you’ll see kids younger and older too. It was just so nice to switch scenery from the rides to Sea Life to the Water Park, and kept the kids’ attention front and center.

So if you’re looking for a chill weekend (as in no makeup, ok lip gloss, and casual attire) and just old-fashioned family fun, Oceanside is a strong contender. And it’s really not the military town many remember it is. It’s all surfer and very relaxed. Finally, consider taking the Amtrak train, just two blocks from the Wyndham (we needed a car, so couldn’t this time).

Keep Island Time Sundays at The Island Hotel

Keep Island Time Sundays at The Island Hotel

August 12, 2011

If you don’t have a pool in your backyard or nearby, or just want to getaway for the day, consider The Island Hotel. Formerly known as the Four Season’s, the luxe escape is located near Fashion Island. They are quite family-friendly there and invite the public to swing by any Sunday for some island time. We stopped by last Sunday this Summer for a relaxing day away of swim from 3-5 and BBQ poolside dining 5-7. Here’s a quick :60 look from dinner.

The chef was kind enough to prepare two delicious Vegetarian plates for my son and I. And both of my kids, of course, adored many trips to the dessert bar. Prices for the swim and BBQ day are: $34 per adult,  $12 per child and complimentary for children under 5.

Kids can also play some nearby ping pong and foosball by the pool. It’s a nice idea for a family get-together too, as the ambiance at the Island Hotel is quite nice and the location is quite central. If you’re interested, for reservations, call 949.760.4920.

Hot for an OC Summer: Wild Rivers and Discounts4Fun

Hot for an OC Summer: Wild Rivers and Discounts4Fun

July 28, 2011

It’s so the perfect time to cool off at Wild Rivers. Sometimes it’s easy to forget just how much fun the little people have on all those slides. Here’s a look at our day to refresh the fun for you. The kids were buzzing all around the park picking their favorite “rides,” letting the “ocean” take them in the wave pool and filling up water balloons with their mischevious dad. While I (pregnant) hit the Lazy River and chilled.

If you go, be sure to soak up the savings anyway you can. Here’s a Wild Rivers coupon below, or hit discounts4fun.com where you can save up to 80% at various summer fun stops.

Great GNO at OC’s Mary Poppins

Great GNO at OC’s Mary Poppins

July 20, 2011

Few events come along where Moms and their girls can have such a perfect night out. Suz Broughton and I did just, as we planned a special Girl’s Night Out to see the show and dine at Jerry’s deli prior. We all got all dressed up for our night at the” the-at-er.”

While the show is, of course, great for all ages, it’s just a little more special with Moms and daughters. Here are Suz and I in front of the gorgeous Segerstrom Center for the Arts, and our girls dolled up below.

Dining at Jerry’s is a great way to start your night before the show. It’s a fun eatery with healthy-size servings and just a short walk to the Center. I’d recommend you leave your car there and just pay the valet the $5, then keep your car thee till after the show. The evening walk is divine among the night lights too.

Now … onto the show. It was more the overall experience for me than all the particulars of the performance. I know my girl will remember the show and night, but mostly the memories, which she may someday share with her girl. The show was big broadway all the way with very impressive and often vibrant sets, entertaining numbers with high energy and some eye-popping maneuvers such as Mary Poppins flying over the audience and a sassy vertical walk up and around the stage perimeter by Bert, the endearing chimney sweeper. My girl’s favorite part? The ridiculously talented Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious musical number. How do they do that?

We clapped, laughed, smiled and cheered along with the crowd’s standing O at the end. Then the Broughton gals and my girl and I strolled back amongst the full moon and artsy architecture with a giggle in our step. It was a magical night. One which I’d highly recommend. And one which reminded me to try and put a little more Mary magic in my every day Mom approaches. Yes, I want to secretly be her.)

For more Mary Poppings, be sure to check out Suz’s post as well as Drama Momma’s critic wrap-up here on OC Family.

The performance runs through August 7th. Call (714) 556-2787 or click for tix.

Ever seen a movie in D-BOX motion seats? Only one place in OC.

Ever seen a movie in D-BOX motion seats? Only one place in OC.

June 28, 2011

I had never heard of the seats and no one I knew had, so I had to check out these mystical D-BOX motion seats that I was hearing about at the Anaheim GardenWalk.

We went. We saw. We thought they rocked. UltraLuxe Cinemas at the GardenWalk is the only theater in Orange County with these D-BOX motion seats, which are programmed to move in sync with onscreen action. We saw Pirates 4, so when the boat swayed, you swayed. When something on screen jumped, your seat jumped. When rapid action took place, your seat rapidly moves to the motion.

The experience added a very cool, new dimension to moviegoing. It really, “put you in the story.”

Some things to know: there are only about 20 D-Box seats in the specific theater, the next closest location with D-Box is Mann’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, each seat has 4 levels (slow, medium, fast, off), the seats are more expensive than regular seats (about double the cost, I believe).

My kids loved the experience and my massive movie-going husband also gave it a thumbs up; he said “everything synced perfect.”

The UltraLuxe Cinemas at Anaheim GardenWalk has ended the Pirates D-Box showing and Super 8 is in D-Box now. If you don’t know much about Spielberg’s Super 8, it’s said to really be a kids’ movie (many think it’s only for adults), and reminded many of seeing ET as a kid.  By the way, we also caught Kung Fu Panda 2 at the UltraLuxe Cinemas. A nice bonus of going to the movies at the GardenWalk is the atmosphere : upscale restaurants from PF Chang to Roy’s to Cheesecake Factory, as well as specialty stores like Lush (which I love!).

Other 411 UltraLuxe Cinemas at Anaheim GardenWalk scoop:

•UltraLuxe Cinemas has the all-digital UltraMAXimum 65-foot giant screen experience, similar to an IMAX, except they don’t charge any extra to watch a movie in UltraMAXimum.

•UltraLuxe is all-digital, meaning all 14 screens feature 100% digital projection for the crispest, clearest movie presentation available.

• Cinema Café – featuring full sit-down table service and wait staff, serving gourmet movie fare including paninis, salads, quesadillas, desserts, specialty coffees ,etc.

•Star-Class auditoriums – these smaller more intimate auditoriums are for 21+ audiences only, guaranteeing an adult environment – they also feature in-theater ordering and service from our Cinema Café

• Parent Movie Morning and Baby’s Night Out – Parents can watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters in a baby-friendly setting that includes valet stroller parking, dimmed lights, reduced volume, and changing facilities in the auditorium. Featured movies will be recently released titles that are for adult audiences, not children’s or animated films. Parent Movie Morning is held every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Baby’s Night Out is held the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.. Admission is $6 for adults and children under 4 are free.

•Kidtoons – G-rated animated films every Sat and Sun at 10:30 a.m., all year round, for only $2.50. This month’s feature is Thomas & Friends: Hero of the Rails.

•Summer Series- Every Tuesday and Wednesday from June 28 through August 31, kids are invited to enjoy 10 weeks of recently released, family-friendly films for the one-time ticket price of $5.00. A different film is featured each week, including favorite titles such as Yogi Bear, Shrek Forever After, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and How to Train Your Dragon.

VIDEO: Gotta love a Duffy

VIDEO: Gotta love a Duffy

February 14, 2011

Who wouldn’t love it? A 2-hour sunset cruise in Newport Harbor is so relaxing and fun with friends. Duffy Boats invited us to get our sea legs ons and they are sharing the love with you too (keep reading). We went to celebrate a birthday, or you could opt for an anniversary, a party with friends, relatives in town—it’s all good. The boats seat 10-12. We really had a great time and the kids had a total crush on taking the captain’s chair and driving the Duffy. Here’s a look at our day out:

You can bring any feast you’d like with a bottle of wine and drinks. And the boats have an iPod hookup or you can brings CDs.

If you really want to go easy and breezy, have your cruise catered by one of Duffy Newport’s local restaurant partners. The Back Bay Bistro was kind enough to cater our cruise with gourmet wraps, salads and more. Back Bay met us at the dock 15 minutes before our cruise, and brought our feast of fabulousness. They’ll arrange any meal you’d like—and they even have a children’s menu.

So want to win that Duffy cruise? Easy (the only way I roll). Just take a look at the video and comment here on what about the cruise looks the most fun to you. For an extra chance to win, also comment at my blog at OC Family, and amp your cruising odds.Good luck. I’ll pick a winner Random.org) this Friday, Feb. 17th so enter by then.  (Winner chooses preferred Mon-Thurs 2 hour cruise; sunset is best of course. $170 value.)

A little Duffy 411 by the way: you can rent the boats hourly or for a half day; rates here or call the nice folks there at 949.645.6812. And the boats are electric, so no fuel worries and all eco-good.

February 07, 2011

He’s a rising star in the Pacific Symphony Orchestra and a rockstar in Bulgaria. He rocks helicopters, planes and rides motorcycles—and he conducts Family Musical Mornings for the PSO at Segerstrom Hall. I caught up with Maxim Eshkenazy after the latest show. Here is our chat, and by the way, there are still two more shows in the series in March and May. But first, take a look and meet Maxim, who played my Facebook “Free For All” game. He’s a good sport.

So want to check out the Family Musical Mornings with your kids? Click for details and upcoming Spring shows, which includes Beethoven’s Blockbusters and Sleeping Beauty. There is also pre- and post-show carnival fun, and the kids get to meet the artists. Also, think about that Summer Festival; we went last year and love the picnic and symphony scene.

Monster Jam, Ma'am?

Monster Jam, Ma'am?

February 02, 2011

Now I’m not exactly the Monster Jam demo, but my kids are. What pushed me over the edge was this fun pre-show look by my friend Suzanne Broughton. As well as the idea of a pit party look, which I hadn’t heard about. Hit play for Suz’s exclusive look to see what you’d see Feb. 12th at Angel’s stadium, and learn more about the Pit party tickets.

This video reminded me of how big and wild the day would be from a kid’s POV. My husband was really into the idea too, so much so that he wanted to make it part of his birthday day.

So it’s on, and we’re going. And you can find us in the pit too. Which brings me to that VIP experience of the Total Access Pass: A VERY limited number of tickets are set aside for the BIGGEST Monster Jam fans.
The Total Access Package includes:
-One (1) event ticket in the Club Level Sections 322 & 330-331 (the most luxurious seats in Angel Stadium)
-Private Pit Party for one hour the day of the event from 2:00PM - 3:00PM . It’s the ultimate Monster Jam ticket experience I’m told.

By the way, these seats are extremely limited and go fast.

Up for some Monster Jam savings? Parents can save on event tickets—$5 off $32 and $22 seats—when you use code word MOMMY. (Dad’s can use it too;).

The show is also on in LA at Dodger Stadium Feb. 19. Full details at MonsterJam.com

Video: The Rockettes Christmas Spectacular

Video: The Rockettes Christmas Spectacular

December 11, 2010

Here’s my quick look at what you’ll see from the night at The Rockettes Christmas Spectacular show It’s only in town through the 12th, and kids’ tickets are half off!

Now the show tours the country, so perhaps you’l have a chance in another city should you miss this weekend. And by all means, put it on your bucket list for next season. It really is that good. I’d never seen them, and was thrilled to and to share the memories with my kids. I’d love to make it an annual tradition.

The variety of numbers was rich and wide. And the precision of all the times movements really blew my mind. (And their legs really motivated me to get back to the gym.)

Hope you can catch it. Saturday 3:30 pm and 7 pm shows. And Sun 12 and 3 pm Click for tickets, half off for kids too!

Video: Exclusive Nutcracker Dress Rehearsals

December 08, 2010

I almost got trampled shooting this. Dancers, Mice, Angels, Soldiers, Stagehands, and more were buzzing about for this first all-decked out Barclay Dress Rehearsal (actual show runs Dec. 11-24). See this exclusive look and comment to win 4 tickets ($120 value).

The Barclay was a buzz with all the energy of 200 anxious dancers, ready to tip toe to the holiday classic. It was pure joy to watch it all unfold. And the heart that goes into this show is something else. Salwa Rizkalla, Artistic Director of the Festival Ballet puts her everything into this production–one that should be a $2-3 million dollar affair, but she does it on her savvy FBT budget and offers the tickets at a very reasonable amount ($40 for adults and $35 for kids).

And speaking of tickets, get your tickets fast as the season normally sells out and seats are filling up! It’s a holiday classic that entertains, inspires with art and promises long-lasting memories of the season.

So let’s get to that free giveaway. Just comment here on this post here at DebbieintheOC.com, or at my blog at OC Family (or heck, you can enter at both for an extra chance to win). Just tell me you want to go. Enter by Dec. 15th! I’ll pick a random winner (via Random.org), and it’s as easy as that.

Happy holidays, OC! Tis the season to dance.

November 17, 2010

My first Duck (Disney, that is) interview. And, like with kids, asking yes/no questions isn’t great. No Duck offense. Hit play to see what’s on at our West Coast’s winter wonderland.

So much fun! There really is so much to see at the resort. We were fortunate to do it in two days, as Disneyland hosted us and about 40 other West Coast families to a holiday preview at the resort and a very fun holiday party at the Grand Californian hotel.

I hit the main holiday attractions in my video chat, which hopefully got you in the mood, but here’s an overall to-see list:

•The Christmas Fantasy parade at 2 pm daily
•”it’s a small world” is transformed
•Haunted Mansion
•”Believe … in Holiday Magic” Fireworks & Snowfall
•Santa’s Reindeer Roundup in Frontierland
•Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle
•New Orleans Square
•The Christmas Tree and décor on Main St.
(plus World of Color & ElecTRONica at California Adventure)

So magical, so fun! Enjoy! Happy holidays!

What's rad with Razor

What's rad with Razor

November 01, 2010

So Razor gave me the choice to give away any ride I wanted, and I went with the “Go big or go home” thought and went for the full-size E300 Electric Razor Scooter. And I’m so glad I did. You will be too, if you score it. Read on—but first see what’s the latest with them (quick :60 video chat during our recent Razor playdate):

So during our Razor day, the kids and adults got to test-drive all the latest rides and wheels. The electric go-karts (called ride ons) were a big score with the kids, as were all things drifter style (think cool-kid big wheels aka caster-driven rides). And the Sole Skate had some cool, very mobile factor to it, but the electric stand up caught my eye for several reasons. So we had ours delivered this week and played on it all weekend.

The E300 Electric Scooter is instantly fun, and awesome for all. It holds up to 220 lbs (vs. the E100 that holds 120 lbs). Now the E300 is recommended for 13 yrs. and up, but my 7 year old mastered it in five minutes. Me? Took about two minutes. What I completely dig about the E300 is “the all in” factor, or should I say “all out”? We are all outside riding together. They can hop on their classic-style razor, I hop on the E300 and we all head out. Family active hang time outdoors, and I’m not screaming at them from the top of the street to “Watch out for the car. Car!!” You know how it goes; I can be right there with them now. Now, I don’t hog it all the time, we switch, ride double and my husband definitely gets his Razor time in too.

I also like that we could Razor to school, and I could electric home. The E300 folds up too like the regular Razors, so you can throw it in your car, head to a park, beach etc and all be mobile without cumbersome bike racks.

It’s a total family hit. And the thing’s pretty fast, up to 15 mph. In these times of wanting a lot of bang for your buck, I think it really delivers as it’s got the mass appeal to it. So glad I was invited to this play date and got to know this company; their desire to get kids out there really impressed me, as did the evolution of scooter paths they’re on. Who knew?

Oh, the cost for this cool tech toy? About $260, and some quick E300 specs:

-Razor’s speediest electric scooter

-larger deck, beefy frame and tires

-eco-friendly electric power and quiet

-charge holds 40 mins nonstop ride time (takes 8 hr recharge time)

-twist grip hand throttle acceleration

So, want to score the E300 Electric Scooter, just leave a comment on my post at OC Family and I’ll pick a winner (via Random.org) this Friday night, November 5th. Hope you win!

:60 rehearsal look at The Firebird at The Barclay

:60 rehearsal look at The Firebird at The Barclay

October 11, 2010

The famous Russian folk tale ballet hits The Barclay in Irvine this weekend, October 16th & 17th. Here’s a sneak look at rehearsals. And, psst I have tickets to give away, keep reading. So hit play now to learn about the show.

The Firebird is a 1910 one-act ballet (about 45 minutes), and it is paired with several other contemporary pieces (a modern, upbeat, fun performance of Oops and as a rare treat performance, Laurencia). So the two hours of performance will be a great opportunity to see a wide array of dance.

Little more on backstory of the event at The Barclay? The Firebird production is choreographed by Nikolai Kabaniaev and features Jade Payette of Washington Ballet in the title role. The program also includes the two newly commissioned pieces choreographed by Molly Lynch and Viktor Plotnikov, and the Pas d’Action from Laurencia set by Yuri Fateyev, the Artistic Director of the Kirov.

It was a treat to see these Festival Ballet Theatre dancers in rehearsals. The FBT Company is one of Southern California’s most vibrant and accomplished regional ballet companies. They always bring it with a wealth of impressive talent, and, by the way, the company often features internationally acclaimed guest artists from American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, the Kirov Ballet, New York City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and Scottish Ballet.

The Firebird and the mixed repertoire tickets run $35 adult, $20 children. Performances are Saturday, October 16 at 7:30pm and Sunday, October 17 at 2pm. Get your tickets here or at TheBarclay.org.

My family and I are really looking forward to the event; love exposing the kids to such top talent with heart. See you there.

Want to go?  I have a family set of 4 tickets to give away. Just comment at my blog on the story on OC Family.

Disneyland Trick or Treat party

Disneyland Trick or Treat party

October 11, 2010

If you haven’t hit the special 10 party nights during October, think about going. It’s a riot. So much to see and do, deets here: Trick or Treat front.

I gotta say, I really loved how the park was transformed for the party; all the music was switched out, dry ice and fog were everywhere and killer decor set the mood. All of which gave Disney some fun edge.

Want more on the night? Click for my live Whrrl photo look of the fun below.

By the way, three learnings from the party night:

1. Eat dinner before you go, and you’ll save some cash, of course.

2. Have kids wear an outfit that’s highly recognizable, as they love hearing “Hey Woody!” etc as they approach all in the park (The kids in the less obvious attire, may feel lost in the crowd.)

3. Don’t rush, there is plenty of candy and time for all throughout the party.

Holy Tower of Terror! Disneyland Halloween peek

Holy Tower of Terror! Disneyland Halloween peek

September 28, 2010

A little spook and creep to get you in the mood this year?A few of us OC’ers got a first look at the Disneyland Halloween scene.

Now the lines for the top Halloween haunts (Tower, Space Mountain & Haunted Mansion)? Yes, I hear they are long. We had our resourceful Disney guide, Devin, for cuts, but I heard the lines ranged from 35 mins to two hours. I say it’s worth it this time of year, and try checking out the Disneyland phone apps for wait time 411. By the way, Devin also gave me the word on “Chicken Doors,” ever heard of them? Backdoor door dashing for those who suddenly have a change of faint-heart. Think I wish I had known about that for myself on Tower of Terror (first time on and I broke my nail clinging onto my 5-year old, as I genuinely screamed my bloody head off.)

Other scoop? Mickey’s Halloween Party is NOT at California Adventure this year, it’s going down at Disneyland for the first time in many years. You pay a separate ticket price for this, and can get all the information here.

And as for eats? Thunder Ranch is really a fave of mine (tofu BBQ skewers, yum!) and the kids adore the all-you-can-eat. Adults are $25, kids are $10 and you can leave cowboy-bellyaching if you let yourself.

Plus there is World of Color after dinner, if you haven’t seen the show yet. It’s really great, my WOC and Glowfest look from summer.

Hope you have a spooky good time.

:60 VIDEO: Baptism by board. The OC Skate scene.

:60 VIDEO: Baptism by board. The OC Skate scene.

September 06, 2010

Never heard of “trucks”? I’m with ya. So when I won this “deck,” it was a whole new world. Take a look at the local skate love I found in OC and learn about building a custom board:

Now I’m kind of the peace and love type (started my kid in yoga at two). So I never really saw the “lift on the pop” lingo in my life. But I got ushered in right. I respected the art by SteevCreeper (heavy into surf and skate btw and roots in Black Flys), who donated his time and talent to the Surfrider foundation raffle. And I liked his Hindu connection with the Skate scene and global look at society. So my eyes opened.

And I loved what I saw from the guys at Laguna Surf & Sport. Community, connecting with kids, passion for a sport. Frankie, who built the board, and Jimmy, who runs the place, sealed the deal for me. They got to know my guy, were cool enough to explain a lot of things to me, and, most importantly, I felt like my kid was really in good hands. They care about the kids at LS&S, get to know ‘em all, even let kids build their own boards there with them (assemble and all as they age up), and they really want the kids to love their boards and express themselves as individuals (custom board package just $119).

So will I forgo the downward dog for kickflips and ramps? Surprisingly yes. Now. As long as he “rocks the pads.” All 6. And keeps that helmet tight.

Local skate love. Just sharing the sick scene.

Tiny Dancer? :60 live look at Southland Ballet Academy

Tiny Dancer? :60 live look at Southland Ballet Academy

July 28, 2010

Got a tiny dancer? Here’s a quick look at the best in OC dance: the Southland Ballet Academy and their new Irvine Studio (with free introductory classes).

My girl hit the academy this week to try their ballet camp, and she had a most charmed week that has got me seriously thinking about taking a shot at a future dancer. I’m all for the arts, as you may know, but the thing is I’m not a believer in raising a jack-of-all-trade, but master-at-none, overscheduled child. So I’ve put off trying my kids in multiple sports and interests, waiting for signs of the real deal. This academy has got me considering fueling my girl’s new heart’s desire.

I appreciate that the Academy is at the top of their game, that they have the most proven track record of students who go on to perform professionally, and I like the very accomplished dancers who are running the academy (some of the students now teaching have been there since 4 years old; which speaks volumes for the passion and organization.)

The group has a rich history in OC since 1983, but it’s new Irvine location (their second to their Fountain Valley studio) is very attractive for various reasons: it’s very modern, very accessible and is in a great area with various distractions for waiting parents.

By the way, the summer camp (check it out next year) was adorable with dance, crafts, cupcake fun and some Sleeping Beauty movie time, plus the kids put on their own “professional” concert at the end of the week.

Here’s to my tiny dancer, and perhaps yours, perhaps finding a real life love.

Do you have an Angelina Ballerina?

VIDEO: Anything goes at The OC Fair, right?

VIDEO: Anything goes at The OC Fair, right?

July 19, 2010

Is the Fair just for the kids? It’s for everybody I think. All types, all walks of life, and anything goes. Let’s just say I haven’t seen that many cigarettes, tats and black tees since, well last year at the Fair. It’s eat at your own risk and ride at your own risk, right? Case in point? Click and take a a live look

Now I don’t know these clowns’ back story but I know they hang there every day at the Fair, and they don’t even work there. They were characters and I kinda liked there all-out spirit.

The theme is The Beat Goes for 2010 fairgoers, and it’s all the carnival crazy and fried everything you remember with some new concert names and a new Hanger attraction.

Things I forgot you may want to plan for:
-Your kids ADD disorder that switches on like a light when they walk through the entrance. So many rides, games and food vendors, all vying for their attention. Meltdowns are quick unless you have a fat wallet. Wish I’d said: 5 rides, 3 games, 3 foods, and we’re good. That kind a thing might have helped.

-It’s hot, baby! Go later in the day; the night scene is fun and has that old-school feel.

-Hit the free kids’ area asap to play games when your game $ runs out.

-Bring your sense of adventure, and let the chips fall where they may. I tried a Mexican funnel cake (churro sugar fried conglomeration) this time vs the regular. Verdict: not as good but fun to branch out.

Yea, I can stick it to the Fair, like we all can, it’s so easy; but truth is, there’s a cool sense of old-time community that breeds through that place. And I think at heart, it’s a bunch of people from all walks of life just being kids again out to have fun and hang with others. And you can’t knock that.

Have you hit Newport Dunes Movies on the Beach?

Have you hit Newport Dunes Movies on the Beach?

July 13, 2010

Take in fun, free, family flicks on the sand. We hit Newport Dunes Saturday night, and will be back for more for sure this summer. The kids are asking when already.

All the movie skinny on the Newport Dunes Movies on the Beach site.

What’s playing next? Everything from Cars, Aladdin and the Fantastic Mr. Fox to Princess and the Frog, Night at the Museum and The Bee Movie.

Bring your blankets, smore kits, coolers and chairs. And hit the Back Bay Bistro before if you want to add some swank to the scene.

Pacific Symphony Summer Festival is on

Pacific Symphony Summer Festival is on

July 06, 2010

I think we are so lucky to have this outdoor concert venue (Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre) paired with the Symphony right in the middle of OC. I love the different classical theme nights from cannonball grandness to Cirque whimsy, the al fresco picnining with your family and the exposure of real arts with the kids.

We hit the first of the 5 festivals in the series opening night.

My kids really enjoy the symphony series, we’ve gone for the past 3-4 years. It’s the grandness, the big production and the picnic’ing! Anything with food ups the fun factor, right? Well this year we paired the concert with a picnic catered by Bristol Farms catering, who were kind enough to let us sample their offerings:

I must say the picnic preorder was effortless. I was always intimidated: when to order, what to order, how to order, but let me tell you, it’s very easy. Eric & Pia at Bristol Farms rock: 949-760-6514. I particularly loved our cheese appetizer and the wine went down very smooth. And the kids couldn’t wait to dig into the brownies (of course). Pairing with Bristol Farms completes the refined symphony nature, and it’s quite a treat as opposed to personal pre-prep and the haul up the hill. You simply arrive at the PSO gate and your cuisine is ready and waiting to enjoy.

Not sure your kids will be down for the symphony? Give it a go. It’s now become tradition with us.

Disney World of Color & Glowfest opening night

Disney World of Color & Glowfest opening night

June 14, 2010

Much to say about the World of Color night and insider tips, but I’ll let my Whrrl story cover much of that.

My kids adored the Wold of Color show. My girl gushed on Arial, my guy loved Buzz, and my hubby was diggin’ the fire and pirates (the Johnny Depp bit did have serious cool factor).

I personally didn’t grow up going to Disney as I’m a transplant, so I don’t have the die-hard connection, so it’s all about creating my kids’ memories. And while much will be said in great lengths about the show, my girl described it as “great and very pretty.” My guy, “wow,” I think Walt would have liked that just fine.

And Glowfest? You gotta go. Very fun and funky, and so I want that martini next time. For a little more on our night, see my live whrrl photo story below.

Wild time at Wild Rivers

Wild time at Wild Rivers

June 07, 2010

I was outfitted for the wild, zebra and all, as we hit Wild Rivers—my son’s family birthday pick. Now I’m not really the scream-your-head-off, rider Mom-type. Sure I was as a kid, but that usually changes. I’m more the chillax by the pool and sunbathe with a cocktail. But when the kids bat those pretty-please eyelashes, it’s amazing what I’ll do.

So I actually rode lots. My kids rode everything numerous times with the hubby. My faves: the big family slide that goes seriously fast, the boat ride (longest wait, so go early in day to skip lines maybe) and I had fun on double-rider tubes with the kids.

The “toilet-plunger” (we call it), was thumbs down and two Tylenol from this mama. You zoom down tubes hands behind head, it whips you around, circles you into a toilet-like bowl, then plunges you in a pool. My 5-year old rode it two more times (whacked), while my girl and I went to the warming pools (ahh).

Lots to do for all ages, and cool for all ages. There’s the family vibe, teen scene, and baby pool (always warm). One place with lots of range.

Anyway, it was a fun time, even for this way chillax Mom. And the kids loved seeing me slip, slidin’ and screamin’ my head off.

Check my Whrrl story below for coupon savings this season and some park tips. I think it’s gonna be a perfect summer for all the wet and wild.

DreamWorks is gaming.

DreamWorks is gaming.

March 19, 2010

Video gaming and kids are always hot topics with moms. So I hit DreamWorks for a sneak peek of their new Kung Fu Panda World. The skinny and talk of if gaming’s good.

DreamWorks was kind enough to invite a few of us to the campus to get the Kung Fu lowdown and also tour the great DreamWorks land. I’ll share the game 411, then give you the “behind the gates.”

Kung Fu Panda World is the first in online gaming for the animation imagination wizards. It launches March 26th and appears to have serious graphic game, parent-safety and a killer fun-factor for kids 7-13. The World competes with Webkinz and the like, as well as older pop rivals. And I suspect, it will overtake, as DreamWorks has gone all out for near two years amping graphics that go way beyond stairstep movements and keeping the thrill alive for kids (aka, no burnout factor). And the World also acts like a pre-Facebook space for the older tweens with its social peer play.

Now my kids are 4 and 6, so I really haven’t delved into the gaming arena yet. That said, I chatted with head creator and DreamWorks man for 14 years, Rick Rekedal. I drilled him a bit on our Gen Computer Kids and the role of video. While talking game and swapping some toy stories (I wrote/shot many Mattel commercials a few yrs back), Rick ‘fessed of his own family: “Oh us? We’re a total book family.” (Serious book family, like Dakota vacations to Little House on the Prairie land, really.) So I’m thinking, say what?! You’re the gaming guy. What gives?

Well, as suspected, this best-of-the-best tech animator gamer still values old-school imagination. For his 3 girls, computer time is very limited and used as a reward. I got the sense of moderation meets safe fantasy play. I dig that, and I share this if you’re a mom like me, resisting the video world reality. Let’s face it: Resistance is Futile, right. As he said, think: of gaming as a reward system, set time limits, but let the kids have the fantasy fun. So after my day at DreamWorks, I just may embrace what’s next and that which my wanna-be Apple kids have been begging mom for: some computer time!

Oh, the Kung Fu Panda World gaming is a subscription service ($5.95/month) and kids can create their own Kung Fu identities, challenge other kids in Kung Fu showdowns and ultimately become the Dragon Warrior. (And you get games for big people too.)

Now ... onto the behind the gates. Cue the choir. “Ahhh.” Seriously. The company headquarters rock. A river runs through the place, waterfalls gush like Niagara (also paired with some koi tranquility of course), and nature surrounds. Creativity flows literally and before the eyes in all directions.

Check the whrrl for more vibe. It was a great day, and, hey, I walked away with much more than tech specs about their new launch (as I hope you have). “Gaming is good?” You decide.

No that wasn’t a typo. The symphony can be way cool for kids, really, as evident in my recent outing for the Super Hero soundtrack performance. More Family Concerts always ahead from the PSO. Click for the upcoming PSO family events from their musical mornings and musical storytime.

Here’s a quick look at the fun you can expect from PSO events. At our orchestral outing, my little guy didn’t roll his eyes once, didn’t beg to get out of his seat and there wasn’t even negotiating to “be good and just stay for 15 minutes more, already!”

My super kid loved the sounds of the Super Heroes, the grand scale of it all, and a special Mom Day Date Out. I’m all for the arts and any way to entice kids to music that’s not Hannah Montana and Jonas Brothers 24/7.

Have your cake—and photos too

Have your cake—and photos too

January 22, 2010

Two new Party Girlz are on the OC kids’ birthday party scene. And they go by the appropriate name of Party Girlz—a talented twosome who bring arts and ease to Moms with their cake and photography biz.

One half of the duo, Lisa, makes the amazing cakes (like the one seen above), and delivers it to your house the day of your party. The other creative party spirit is Liga, who takes your party pictures that day, so you can relax and actually enjoy your girl or boy’s special day.

The new business is a savvy, smart idea that fills a void I haven’t quite seen addressed around town. And what’s refreshing is their take-charge ways. For my girl’s party, I simply emailed Lisa my robot invite I planned to send out, and threw out a simple, “I was thinking something like this.” Done. I never said another word really, and I was blown away the day of the party when she arrived with Robot Girl in full caked-out attire.  I never dreamed it would be so fantastic, creative, right on, large in scale and utterly charming. She even added a blinking heart—and the head, body and skirt were each different flavors. It totally rocked our dance party theme.

And what a treat the photos by Liga were. I didn’t have to rush around capturing shots for once in my life. She gathered the kids for group shots, and even created a thank you card for me to mail out to all the parents. It was the first time in ages I’ve actually ever sent one out; I normally have my good intentions that quickly go out the door with the ripped wrapping paper and Barbie boxes. Liga got shots I would certainly have missed and photos of all my gal’s besties.

So bravo, to Party Girlz for making this mom’s life easier—and my girl’s day ridiculously special.

Have a party coming up? Party Girlz bring it, literally. Have ‘em bring the cake and pics to you; contact them at 949.395.1628 or 423.335.7985.

Cheers.

Party on and breathe easy.

If you have a kids party to plan, but are theme tapped-out and exhausted by the mere idea, you’re not alone—but you are in luck. OC’s own Lisa Cohen is the creative force behind Creative Parties for Kids. She has a wealth of ideas and an unending resource of entertainers, outfits and party connections to make sure you don’t sweat a thing.

Whatever you want, or your little prince or princess has their heart set on, Lisa will make happen.

Many OC moms may know Lisa as the “Bunny Foo Foo Story Lady,” who reads at many of Orange County’s posh hot spots, but may not know her for her party planning expertise. Lisa has been making kids deliriously happy on their birthdays for over 15 years . She’s hosted two of our children’s parties over the years, and what’s so ideal is her can-do nature and creative spirit.

With Lisa, you simply tell her what your kids are into, and she’ll suggest an array of themes, plan out the day, suggest coordinated crafts and party favors, and touch base with you several times to ease your mind.

If you’re thinking dance party, she can hook you up with OCHSA theater majors, she’ll find you a Disney princess for an Ariel bash, she has Spidey’s best lookalikes, train conducters, high tea hostesses, and the list goes on ... and on ... and on.  And she’ll even create an all-original party for you if you can’t think of a specific theme.

Lisa loves what she does, loves kids, gets kids and seriously aims to please.

So if 2010 calls for a first birthday, a toddler party or even a teen cool kids bash, Lisa’s the gal with the party people and creative ideas.

Go Holiday Wild

Go Holiday Wild

December 16, 2009

Nothing says holidays like a lion rippin’ open his Christmas loot.

It’s good times at the Wild Animal Park this year. And you’ve got three weekends left to soak up the gifting and watching of antelope and other species at play.

During the park’s Wild Holidays 12 Days of Enrichment, kids get to hand-paint presents for lions, gorillas, elephants, vultures and meerkats. And if you’re lucky, you’ll get a peek at them “opening” their present-pretty boxed goods of popcorn and insect-tubes throughout the day.

2009 marks the first year for these wild holiday happenings. I love the idea and inclusion and kindness to our furry friends this time of year. I’ve always been a big fan of the Wild Animal Park and their natural, wide-open habitat, and their holiday spirit didn’t disappoint.

Other kid enrichment activities going down through January 2nd at the Park include creating mazes for meerkats and making tacos out of hay and food pellets for the elephants. Yum, Chipotle, get on that.

There’s also centers for kids to craft presents for their own cats and dogs, slime time and more. A black light puppet show wraps the night and later evening hours get you your money’s worth (all activities are free with admission).

Here’s a look at my press preview at the Wild Holidays opening weekend. It rained cats and dogs, but like that was gonna stop us. Click anywhere on the whrrl below to see the photo story and get a taste of the fun:

I’m gonna gush on Kari Ivey ‘cause I love her that much. Seriously, she is amazing and can make your kid’s party. The crazy thing about Kari is she just kind of blends into the background, does her kid magic and presto little Picasso kids emerge—all painted up and jazzed to show off their new looks.

Kari does sparkly, spooky, sweet, whatever the child wants. Sometimes she’ll match an outfit or go with a theme, anything goes really. And her attitude with the kids is great. Hey, it could be a little hard to handle 30 kids hovering for their time in the limelight, but she is no stress and all talent.

If you’re even thinking of hiring some everyday, ordinary facepainter, you might want to rethink it, and call Kari. Her detail and creativity is amazing. And your party parents really appreciate seeing their kids so thrilled and painted perfectly.

Oh and her paints rock: FDA friendly, of course, cosmetic-grade paints for theater makeup and face and body painting. All of which means they don’t crack like the cheapo stuff.

So if you have a birthday party or holiday bash, Kari’s your gal. And she’s always in demand for corporate events where a facepainter can add some fun and energy to a gig.
That goes for kids painting to adult costume parties to sports events.

Okay, I’m done gushing. But when the gush fits, I’m there.

Fun photos by Mali of MaliWorkman.com and Liga Svikss of Fotograafe.com. Thanks, ladies!

Stuart Little Musical Has Big Heart

Stuart Little Musical Has Big Heart

November 10, 2009

We hit the Laguna Playhouse press preview Friday to see how the cat and mouse would go from book and big screen to small stage. I didn’t quite know what to expect and wondered how the adaptation would play.

It was adorable. My kids cackled and were quickly drawn in as Stuart began his big adventures in the big city. A cast of 15 or so local, talented youth actors brought the story to life.

The sweet Stuart and wickedly naughty Snowbell the cat were perfectly cast. I fell for Stuart and couldn’t get enough of the cat’s theatrical moves and mischief. My kids were equally hooked and kept talking about the duo the next day.

What I love about children’s theater is the leap of imagination needed to follow along. TV and movies have the power to wow kids with smoke and mirrors and animated tricks, but theater requires the mind to play free with a simple, intimate, emotional connection.

Kudos to the young cast for their artful, heartfelt, funny adaptation of such a classic kids’ favorite. The play wraps the 15th, so get while the getting is good if you’re interested in going to this Laguna Playhouse production.

The above illustrations were on display at the Playhouse. They are scenes from the play and were drawn by kids at the Braille Institute of OC. Amazing art, and a story in itself.

Family Theater Hits OCPAC

Strega Nona and the upcoming series at the Family Series at the OCPAC.

Strega Nona is the story of a good witch, the premiere of the ’09-’10 Family Series and the first of six children’s books that will be brought to life at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. It’s an energetic musical of a witch who tries to cure the ills of her Italian town. (Illustrations from the book below.)

My girl is jazzed for tonight as her costume this year is yes, black hat, dress, broom. (Is it just me, or are witches so the rage right now with the kids? Right on to OCPAC and thier perfect Halloween timing.)

OCPAC tells me tickets are very limited for Strega Nona due to the popularity and that the Sunday 3pm show is your best chance to score tickets. Tickets are $18 and are available at OCPAC.org, at the Center’s Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling 714.556.2787.

By the way, the show will include free pre-performance activities (coloring, games and puzzles and a reading area) one before the show.

If you miss Strega Nona, here are other upcoming performances at OCPA, perfect to immerse your kids in the arts: (psst, the OCPAC is a gorgeous venue and makes for great Date Day or Night with the Kiddos)

Weird Funky Science

Weird Funky Science

October 18, 2009

It’s Day of the Dead at Discovery Science Center, and it makes for creepy, artsy culture.

The new Spooky Science: Skeletons exhibit is an interesting combo that runs now through Nov. 8th, and is worth checking out if you’ve got kids with a little morbid curiosity, a love of skeletal eye candy and an appreciation for neon, 3D creativity.

OC moms, you can also engage in some Mexican culture 101, if your kids are old enough to get the heritage. The lesson went over my little ones’ heads, but that didn’t much matter as they were ooh’ed and ahh’ed by everything else.

I asked my girl at the end of the day, “So what did you learn?” She hit me back with “Never touch a skeleton when it’s alive, because it’ll probably get ya or eat ya. And you can use skeletons to scare your brother—that’d be awesome!” (Note to self: scale back on Nickelodeon’s Creepy and Grossology shows.)

Some fun pics below.

Below I’m ghost-imaged, and it wasn’t a 3D effect or reflection. VERY weird.

In this last one, you can see me twice. It’s like Andy Warhol/Blair Witch. I creeped myself out.

Spook and Awe

Spook and Awe

September 30, 2009

Disney got their spook on Halloween style.

Disney got their spook on. And I got the sights and frights firsthand thanks to a VIP tour this past weekend. See my live photo look at the ghoulish attractions when a few of us OC’ers were invited to tour the parks.

The Halloween haunt marks only the third year Disney has done up the place to creep and please. Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy was a serious scream. The Haunted Mansion is charmingly spooky. And there’s an amazing Halloween fireworks show through the end of the month (sit by the castle to see the moving projections as Suz did).

It’s no doubt that the Disney Imagineers know their stuff, know kids and know to scare the you-know-what out of ‘em—and then charm them into wanting more, more!

And you’ll enjoy feeling like a kid again and getting lost in memories of haunted good times. We all need a little unstoppable cackling fear paired with laid-back pumpkin patch relaxation.

Click the whrrl photo for more pics. And you can hit Mickey’s Trick-or-Treat Party, as well as take a read on the new Disney blog to get the full Halloween scoop.

Happy Halloween, Orange County Moms. And don’t worry if you scare the kids for life on Space Mountain. I took my 5-year old, and I’m confident it builds character.

That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. Are you taking your kids?

Shake It, Baby

Shake It, Baby

September 08, 2009

Adorn your girly girls with Baby Emi that jingles when they walk.

This fun fashion style for all ages has modern glam with traditional heart. I talked with owner and fellow OC mom Debbie Savage, who is taking the high-quality brand to glam new heights.

Baby Emi Jewelry has been spotted on Hollywood’s hottest, as well as all over the OC and coast to coast. What’s great about the line is the multipurpose fashion. You can choose it for peace of mind to track your little ones with the jingle bell charm, or opt for the fun fashion for toddler to teen. And kids can wear ‘em on one ankle, on both, as bracelets—Moms can even sport the chic sterling.

Also, the one-of-a-kind brand is rich with Debbie’s ancient Cambodian roots; for hundreds of years, girls there have been dressed with the jingles to keep away the spirits.

I love that Debbie is bringing back the inspired, real glam of ancient Cambodia days, as well as giving back to less fortunate girls in the country today with portions of the profits.

You can get the full downlow on the stylish line at BabyemiJewelry.com. She’s as kind, as she is creative.

Jingle, shake, fashion your fave Baby Emi design.

August 18, 2009

The first look at Irvine’s new kid-friendly Pretend City.

Kids lived it up as they got the keys to the city this premiere night at the museum, where the place seriously came alive.

Pretend City Children’s Museum is an idea 13 years in the making, and it got real by the help of donations as it’s the only nonprofit of its kind in the US.

So what’s it all about? It’s an open door for kids to be whoever and whatever they want to be—an artist, shopper, banker, performer, fireman and more. Anything goes, as kids get to play with all the real accessories to dream big. And while it’s entertaining for sure, it’s even more empowering, I think.

Lucky Irvine to land such a land of dreams for its next gen who will indeed run the show in OC and beyond one day. And way to go to the founders for seeing the idea through. The place is fresh in concept and design with a comtemporary flow. (Moms, that’s code for prepare for kids darting from land to land.)

The city opens to all August 30th. See below for my photos and visit PretendCity.org for all the museum details.

Psst, See

Psst, See "The Secret Garden"

August 07, 2009

Immerse the kids in some theater with a trip to South Coast Rep to see the new musical, The Secret Garden.

In it, Mary and her new friend find the key to an irresistible secret garden, they enter and magical things happen.

The performance follows the classic novel that was written especially for young actors and features SCR’s Summer Players actors, who are chosen through audition after completing at least one year of
training.

I got a press preview of the show and found it a delight. It was a very charming, intimate performance with only about 100 seats total. The young actors were a joy to watch, the classic story was magical and engaging and I really enjoyed the simplicity of the stage and imagination prompted by a streamlined set. My daughter adored the show and was beaming at various parts, even asking to hop on my lap so she didn’t miss a moment.

The play is really a great chance to introduce kids to the stage and possibly peak their interest in performance.

Secret Garden dates are limited to 8 performances. Tickets are just $10 and may be purchased through the SCR Box Office at (714) 708-5555 or online at http://www.scr.org.

Well done, young actors!

To Fair? Or Not To Fair?

To Fair? Or Not To Fair?

July 15, 2009

You’re either a Fair Person, or you run screaming at the very thought. Pick your side.

There’s little in-between in this world. You’re either a Fair Lover or a Hater. You dig deep fry or you don’t. You love crowds or you hate masses. And you find charm in the carnival scene or you think it’s a freak show.

Me? No Fair. No way. No how. I’m a Veggie; I close my eyes when I see booths about chocolate-covered bacon and frog legs. I hate people bumping into me. I think some of the rides are whacked. And I don’t do short shorts and high heels well at all. But, this year I was invited for Media Day to the OC Fair, so I went—with a half-opened (quarter, really) mind.

I got my ticket. Walked in. And somebody handed me hummus. Huh? Seriously?! Then Organic Burt’s Bees caught my eye near the entrance. Massage chairs drew me in a little deeper. And then I had a funnel cake, and those rock no matter which side of the fence you’re on. I chased the cake with a Red Stripe Jamaican beer, and, suddenly, I was going with the flow.

Dare I say I found myself in-like with the Fair? Was the hay getting to my brain cells? The heat maybe? I liked chatting with the local vendors and found the game barkers fun and entertaining. A small-town, community spirit came over me in the oversized, often-distant OC.

I saw my kids’ adornment for life’s more simple pleasures: a giant, multicolored slide, the sideshow attraction of passers-by on stilts, the thrill of winning, not buying, (though actually still buying, you know) stuffed bears, doggies, dolphins. We watched a hypnotist taunt his victims, and I cackled at his naughtiness. Then day turned to night, and I was still there! Me, still at the Fair? And I was on my way to the Rick Springfield show (we unexpectedly won tickets during the day).

After the show, we walked the flashy, neon aisles, and I was reminded of my Indian Summer Days at the fair growing up in the Midwest. I flashed back to the lights, the smells, the running into friends, and I remembered how I loved the Fair as a kid.

Maybe the non-Fairers, myself included, lost the kid in ‘em. You can get it back. And for little more than the price of zebra-striped cone, a lemonade, bag of popcorn and open mind.

Click my whrrl photo story below for pics of the whole day. And check out @wachner on Twitter, who often tweets a secret password for free summer fair concert tickets. You just give the usher the secret word when you turn in your 3D glasses after the Weird Al show, and you’re in free to the shows.

Have fun. Cleanse later. (I ate. And ate. And ate.)

A New, Old-Fashioned Treat

A New, Old-Fashioned Treat

July 14, 2009

Let kids be kids!

Powell’s Sweet Shoppe in Laguna Niguel is an old-time, old-fashioned, new candy store made from imagination.

A trip to this heaven-on-earth candy store makes a great treat for well-done “kidness.” And moms, you’ll feel like a kid again with retro sugary finds like Zero bars, Toffifay, Zebra striped gum and more.

Powell’s also serves up to-die-for gelato and they have a fridge full of classic drinks like Orange Crush, Dad’s rootbeer and yoohoo.

Psst, OC moms if you’ve got a kiddo with a birthday coming up, you may want to host it at Powell’s in their fun-fashioned party room. Partygoers get to go on a candy scavenger hunt to find 30 pieces of candy hidden somewhere in the store. The kids get to keep their candy loot, they get a birthday gelato and you get to skip the party cleanup. Sweet, indeed.

And check out my whrrl photo story below with all the pics from our recent “reward trip”:

Be Inspired By You! girls Teen Summer Workshop have heart and soul.

Let’s empower our girls and have them say yes to more self confidence and no to all the hype out there.

Amy Schuber of OC is on board with that and is out to show girls how gifted and gorgeous they are from the inside out with her “Be Inspired By You” creative Teen Summer Workshops.

Studies show 7 in 10 girls today believe they are not good enough or feel they don’t measure up in one of the following ways: their looks, performance in school and relationships with friends and family members. These kinds of society, media and peer pressures will be tackled in a fun, creative and inspiring environment, inviting girls to discover what really lights them up, and brings confidence to who they are.

The 3-week workshops, for girls ages 12-17, give tools that help guide girls to be themselves and be happy with who they are exactly as they are right now.

The July workshop at the Orange Door Studio in Newport Beach just wrapped. To save your spot for future classes, register now. Or for more info, email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or call 714-974-7160.

Low self-esteem in girls is a growing issue—as Dove showed oh so well in their video below. Let’s add a little slo-mo to our gal’s lives.

Disney Nightastic

Disney Nightastic

June 12, 2009

First Look at Opening Night

PLM got a press preview of the new Summer Nightastic scene at Disneyland. It’s a kid’s dream with bright-light magic, imagination and stellar music.

The night play by play: Mitchel Musso from Hannah Montana had the tweens screaming and my 6-year old seeing stars at Tomorrowland Terrace that invites kids to rock out nightly with bands, DJS and dancers.

Later, Wizards’ Selena Gomez kicked off the new fireworks show with Mickey. “Magical” wowed with 13 minutes of spark and awe set to grand Disney score as Tink and Dumbo flew around the castle (my girl melted, making wishes on endless shooting stars).

Next, Fantasmic danced on water with new HD projections, friendly faces, villains, plus fire heat and water showers that made you feel a part of it all.

And finally, Tink ended the night leading the Electrical Parade, which shined with 500,000 bulbs and new neon friends.

Here’s a video peek at the first sparks from Summer Nightastic fireworks. Commentary through the eyes of my five-year old ... the giddy, beside-her-self scream, the kid comedy, magic of wishing and the blur between fantasy and reality. At Disney, who really knows?

A PLM and Disney post-show chat with Quinn about the “new magic” at Disney. Nightvision-like video from this midnight wrap-up:

More of my first-night sights from Nightastic on the Peace Love and Momminess YouTube channel. See the Funky Monkeys from Fantasmic and also the fireworks finale (don’t peek if you like surprises).

2nd Grade’s A Stage

2nd Grade’s A Stage

June 03, 2009

PLM got a front row seat for the preview of the “The Brand New Kid” that mixed music, theatre and kindness at curtain call.

(SInce writing this story, South Coast Repertory has wrapped their June performances of “A Brand New Kid,” but you can always pick up the book, a sweet, relatable read by Katie Couric (the story below). Other SCR summer fun includes “The Secret Garden,” coming in August; see details on the PLM calendar. Plus, there’s the Summer Acting Workshop, where kids and teens build self-esteem and confidence—grades 3-12.)

The “A Brand New Kid” story on the stage ...

We sat front row. I saw my daughter’s eyes widen as the actors hit the stage and colorful sets magically moved about. The show brings to light life in the second grade … all the mix-match outfits, enthusiasm, insecurities and genuine goofy antics. Kid’isms spewed with language of “do-overs,” “ignoramuses” and “jinx” jabs, as dialogue was exchanged and the stage metamorphosized into a day in the life from wake to school to sleep.

Lazlo, the new kid in school from Hungary, took a verbal smackdown, taunting and teasing from the other kids for his accent, attire and unusual smarts. When fellow student and sweet-hearted, Ellie, stood up for the newbie, the other kids turned against her too. By curtain call, the cast of characters realized “everybody’s a weirdo” in their own way. Well said.

It was fun entertainment with a message of tolerance all parents would welcome. All ages enjoyed, from 3 to teen, and boy to girl. And parents, as well as the kids, provided the real laughtrack as the crazy Lunchlady did her thing and the 2nd graders kidded about.

Francie Pants let girls be girls and moms breathe ahhh easy.

If you’re over being the Underwear Police, don’t want to be the Debutante Mom saying “Sit proper!” 500 times, and you’ve gasped your last gasp as you see your little princess poised in her dress but sitting like a construction worker spread eagle ready to chow a Carl’s Jr. burger, Francie Pants may be your new BFF.

Seriously.

These super cute nylon-like boy shorts let girls take cover. The snug fit hides undies with style. Girls can wear ‘em under any skirt or dress—or can wear ‘em solo with a T to the beach, the mall, the park.

So let her cartwheel her heart out because the girl can’t help it. And you’ve got better things to do than go on another skort search, please.

OC moms in the know are getting kiddos Kindy-ready with new Pre K Scholars.

What mom doesn’t worry and wonder if their kids are really kindy ready? Don’t sweat it. Just pre-K prep.

Amy Schwary, Pre K Scholar creator, crafted the new, clever home-based curriculum that’s catching on around OC.

“I wanted the program to be fun and get kids jazzed about learning,” Amy told PLM. Adding, “I knew it was working when the kids were not only learning concepts so thoroughly and quickly, but were also beggin’ their parents to come back.”

A former kindergarten and second grade teacher, Amy, created the program while readying her own gal for school. The program has a clever cast of alphabet characters who live in a little town called Scholarville. The fun friends engage and teach sounds, words, math, science, social studies, and writing at a level to promote kindergarten readiness.

Moms, you can sign your kids up to learn with Amy, her certified Pre K Scholar teachers or you can buy a Family Kit and teach your child yourself. And if you have an education background, or have that Kid Magic, you can sign up for a Home-Based Business Kit and teach other children; it’s a great new source of income, as more moms enter the workforce.

OC moms, breathe easy with Pre K Scholars. Get the full skinny on their site.

"Come & Get It!" Lid's Off Disney's Summer Fun Pass.

April 27, 2009

PLM got the latest dish on What’s New and Next at the park’s media downlow Friday.

The mouse is outta the bag: Disney’s got a new 3-day Summer Fun Pass for $99. SoCal families: play for 3 days for $33 per day at either park (during a 45-day period). Dang!

OC moms, if you’ve been on the fence about Disney, Disney passes, a backyard staycation and all the options, you may want to hop off and get your Fun Pass, as that’s a deal and there’s more new going down:

•California Adventure’s Food and Wine Fest is on for the next 6 weeks. Sample reds and whites or tastes of ice-cold beers from around the globe. Pair with gourmet dishes, celeb cooking demos by Food Network’s Bad Boy Guy Fieri and more.

•There are new eats on the mouse side at the new Big Thunder Ranch BBQ. Toy Story pals entertain as families enjoy hearty helpings—and if you want more, just ask! Down-home rare hospitality. Even this Veggie Mama could dig in with tasty BBQ tofu skewers. (And there’s a surprise dessert kids will flip for.)

•The new “Celebrate! A Street Party” rocks Main Street with rock to conga. Serious energy and stilt dancing.

•Tweens and teens will dig the new TLT Dance Club at Tomorrowland Terrace. We caught an 80s band on stage with Devo hats, punk dos and Loverboy tunes.

•More new and next hits early June with Disney’s Summer Nightastic: The Fantasmic show will be seen in hi-def with a new 40-ft., fire-breathing dragon (that had to be helicoptered in). Tink will lead Disney’s brighter Electrical Parade and Pixie Hollow. And the grand finale: an all-new fireworks show leaves its mark with new effects, friends and magical sounds.

Props to Disney for keeping the dream alive for kids and helping parents make it attainable with the Summer Fun Pass, 2fer tickets, 2 Nights Free and Free for Your Birthday.

All For The Arts

All For The Arts

April 15, 2009

An artistic dose of giving back and giving joy.

If you’re looking for your kids to give back and become more grateful, Discovery Arts is a bright light and a great way to go. The amazing nonprofit org brings music, art, dance and drama to children in the hospital with cancer, serious blood disorders and life threatening illness.

“These very sick kids get to escape their worries once a week when we come to visit,” says Mary Borkett, Discovery Arts organizer and volunteer. “Sick children don’t laugh much, they’re sick to their stomachs from chemo and so very tired. Our group brings joy, light and laughter to these often forgotten children,” she explains.

During the once-a-week visits to various OC hospitals, volunteers bring fantasy costumes for the young patients to transform into characters like the all-powerful Spiderman or beautiful Princess Jasmine, to sing, dance, play and just be a kid for a change.

So where does the volunteering come into play? Your kids can create a Bedside Adventure Kit. Discovery Arts supplies the blank canvas box, and your kids decorate and fill the box with arts and craft supplies. The boxes are then delivered to the children.

Kids can also learn to give back by saving their money and buying a costume for the patients—who adore the outfits so much, they’re often found sleeping in them.

You could even have a pizza party at home or at a fave pizza joint to “raise dough” for the org.

As adults we appreciate our health, but teaching our kids this also may be a great lesson to learn early. Kids want, want and want for what they don’t have, but showing them what they do have might go a long way.

Contact Discovery Arts today.

You’ve tried the gourmet cupcakes. But have you made them yourself?

Sweet Spot is a new spot at Spectrum that lets kids decorate and create a cupcake much like a DIY sundae . Kids pick their cake flavor, from red velvet to classic chocolate to lemon and more. Next, they add their icing with rainbow shades from blueberry to orange. And finally they Picasso-out their cakes at the Wall of Sweets with gummy worms, M&Ms, starburst, you name it (and they get unlimited trips for add-ons).

It’s quality time together disguised as a ooey, gooey treat. Kids can make their masterpieces, moms catch a break and can partake in the more civilized cakes already gourmet. (Go for the coconut number … it’s like a 5-minute dreamy escape to the Islands. DE-lish!)

Cost: $5 a cake. You can also book birthday parties there: $15 a baker includes fun cupcake goodies and makes for a fun, original theme and no clean-up mess.

Some sweet creations below, per 3- and 5-year-old artistes.

3 Little Pigs Kids Will Dig

Does zillion come after trillion? Let’s hope our kids don’t find out.

With the bailout full-speed ahead, our kids and grandkids may have to seriously learn the value of a dollar. Here’s a fun, fresh way to do just that.

“Pick Pigs” is a new spin on piggy banks. While every kid has one little piggy, these three really help kids to start making their own decisions with money. Will they stash it to cash it later? Can they spare a dime for a pal? Or will they spend the green as soon as it gets in their hot, little hands.

3 little pigs to Save, Share or Spend. They decide. You raise the next, more genius generation of Greenspans to return our stocks to super value.

Choose quirky vinyl Pick Pigs or go classic pewter. There’s also a clever read to drive the story home.

29 New Characters Join The Cruise: Jasmine, Nemo, Lilo & more!

Giddy up, it’s full speed ahead once more. Disney put the finishing touches on their newly redesigned Fantasyland attraction: “It’s a Small World.” And once again, they’re right on. We got to preview the ride. It’s now open for all to cuise.

You’ll find the Small World song we all know so well remains (with a few new mixed-in melodies), and the bigger-than-life presence of the artsy, small dolls still gets a wide-eyed reaction from kids, but now the Disney imagineers have added a new emotional connection for kids with the introduction of 29 new favorite Disney and Disney-Pixar characters. My kids lit up as they spotted familiar friends: “There’s Nemo and Dory! Princess Jasmine! Lilo & Stitch!” It was fun to see the next generation of Disney kids get that magic in their eyes as the cruised through the colorful, multi-cultural world. And it’s still literally the coolest, kick-back, 12-minute ride with the a/c cranked on a hot sunny day.

Disney promises more magic throughout the year with their “What Will You Celebrate?” theme. “Street Party” fun hits March 27th as dancers, DJs and characters take to the street. And April is jam-packed with new draws: “Celebration Roundup,” invites you to enjoy Western-style eats in a new outdoor Big Thunder Family Barbecue restaurant, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique gives little girls the princess treatment with magical hair, makeup and nail girliness, and you can get your thrills as Mickey’s Fun Wheel ferris ride returns to Paradise Pier, along with new boardwalk games.

While the price of admission isn’t easy these day, Disneyland is really delivering a lot of quality, family bang for your buck, particularly with the new Free Admission on your Birthday deal, as well as swell 2fer offers to get you into both Disneyland and California Adventure.

You can get a taste of the Small World cruise in the video here (PLM cameo: we’re the last shot in the first rows). Enjoy! We did.

Rock On, Little Rockers

Rock On, Little Rockers

Removable sleeves please every season. Fun meets function in these hot tees that rock year round.

LAF, which stands for “Lil Angel Face,” is the creative genius behind the style. The company actually has a patent pending on their “attachables clothing.” It’s simple, about time and economy-friendly as kids can wear their gear spring through winter. Just take the sleeves off when it’s hot, and when the temps cool down, back on they go. They’re also great when sleeves become too short as kids grow up: Simply pull off the shirt sleeves and wear as is, or layer over other long-sleeves tees. Lots of ways to stretch the dollar.

There are all kinds of styles, colors and sizes, from bodysuits for 3 mo.-18 mo. to tees for 2T-5T. You can even mix and match and have 3 different styles in one shirt. (And the mixed-matched look is so the scene with the cool kids.)

LAF has more up its clever sleeve too: it’s called the Roll-n-Go Rollable Diaper Caddy. It turns any purse into a diaper bag. Stuff all your stuff in a chic convenient carrier with perfect-sized pockets and pop it in your purse, bag or backpack of choice; it’s a perfect fit as it neatly unscrolls.

Mention PLM and get 15% off your entire order, or enter this code for online orders: LPM15. An extra smile: a portion of all online sales will be donated to The Smile Train, to help give unfortunate kids a “Lil Angel Face” and help them “LAF” again.

Style. Simplicity. Function. And they’ve got heart. Rock on.

Cosi's Cookie-Straw Draw

Cosi's Cookie-Straw Draw

January 23, 2009

Whatever gets them in the door, right? Cosi makes for healthy OC eats the kids will go for.

Cosi restaurant is a secret South Coast stopover hidden away at the very back end of the Metro Pointe shopping area. The fun, cookie straws, packed with cookies & cream crumbles that goo up when they drink with milk, are what they remember, the healthy foods are what you sneak in under their nose.

“Simply good taste” is the Cosi mantra and they live up to it with a range of very good, quality menu options. Kids can choose flatbread pizza fresh from the open-flame stone oven and made from a two millennia-old recipe, and there is plenty for the big people to pick from ... salads, soups, shareables, melts, sandwiches and a Lighten Up menu Moms can appreciate.

The added appeal is that Cosi is a total kid-friendly spot (ask about the S’mores Kit) that’s refreshingly upscale and urbane with a side of inspired Parisian cafe vibe—a bonus for a spot with $7 dishes.

So check it out this weekend if you’re in the area. (There are only two in California: Costa Mesa and Temecua, so we’re lucky to be Cosi-close).

Marley & You?

Marley & You?

January 11, 2009

The kids saw the movie. They want the dog. Reality bites.

Do you deprive your kids the pure joy of growing up with a furry best friend to forgo the path of destruction of puppyhood ... to keep the leather couch in tact, to save your Berber carpet, to prevent your faux-finish walls from being chewed through to the 2x4s? Could you possibly be such a heartless, materialistic Mama? Nah, the reality is, those little lovable labs are utterly, insanely naughty by nature and will seriously eat you out of house and home if you let them.

But maybe the kids can have their Marley, and you can keep your house. The fix: let your lab chomp till its heart’s content … on somebody else’s turf. Consider Doggie Daycare. No, it’s not the “so OC,” over-the-top scene you may be thinking. It’s really just you vs. beast, and you keeping your home in one piece.

You drop off your wide-eyed pup in the am at your local daycare and let them chew, romp, run, nest, dig and bury till they can’t destroy anymore. Then you pick them up at night so tired that they can’t even lift up their furry little head to greet you. They’re spent. You’re sane. There’s balance. And everyone’s happy.

Just google the daycare in your city, or check out some local dog hot spots: The Dog Ranch in Laguna (that even sports a salt pool for the water dogs, pictured here), Wags and Wiggles in Rancho Santa Margarita and Tustin, Pet Suites in Aliso and more.

Daycare visits can add up, averaging $30+/day, which is steep particularly in today’s economy, but it’s daycare or your hardwoods, your cabinets, your wardrobe, your mental well-being. Luckily, they don’t have to go daily, as the post-pickup exhaustion lasts for a dreamy 2-3 days.

(Oh, and psst: after a year, your Tornado Marley will turn into a Gentle Giant, who will probably teach your kids a lifetime of compassion, friendship, kindness, respect and responsibility.)

"I believe"

January 05, 2009

Feed their imaginations. Inspire their dreams.Kids will love this imaginative book with original art by local Laguna artist Jim Stanaland. This dino fantasy dreamland invites kids to believe anything’s possible and follow their heart. Well done.

Every page of “I believe” is filled with bright, colorful illustrations and positive kid power that’s all wrapped together in important life lessons of friendship and self belief. Kids melt into this surreal world of dinos surfing, singing, moonwalking and more. And writer Suzanne Dunn does a great job of making it all relatable. An artful thumbs up! Stanaland shows his paintings at Laguna’s Sawdust Festival often or you can contact him at 949.357.6570.

TayDiva Smarts

TayDiva Smarts

January 01, 2009

Bald beautiful babies, unite! This one’s for you. TayDiva.com got smart and found a fix for all the babies who enter the world with a sparkle in their eye, but not a lock on their head. Stylish, zebra-striped headbands hug their little heads with microfiber that actually fits. Diva dazzle adds sparkle. There’s also beanies, chic diaper covers and more.

The biz is run by a great local lady, Jen Leake, Chief Diva. She got the idea for the business after her third lovebug emerged as bald as bald gets. She didn’t want the world mistaking her little angel for a Tyler, instead of her sweet Taylor, so she began making girly girl diva headbands. Comfort was as important as style, because she’d been down this road before and knew most headbands looked the part but slid and slipped. Hence the microfiber solution. After success with the headbands, came the beanies, diaper covers and more. Now you’ll find TayDiva in many local boutiques and growing the brand every day.

It’s always that idea of “Somebody needs to make this, and make it right.” Next time you have an idea, do it up, baby.

Yogi Pokey

Yogi Pokey

January 01, 2009

Mini yogis teaches kids of all ages focus, patience, strength, balance and kindness. The kids get to hop around like frogs, do lion poses and sun salutations are in the form of the yogi pokey. Shana Meyerson is the head yogi and has instructors come to your house, on your schedule (aka no stress for Moms). The classes wrap with the young yogis resting in savasana, as still as can be for even 30 seconds. Quite a sight and exercise in calm.
